I’m working on a series of images for the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey; home of Coast Guard Boot Camp. I thought I would start with an image of the Company Commanders who are the people responsible for training the recruits. I thought something dramatic that could portray the intense atmosphere of Boot Camp would be appropriate.
Rather than hoping for a dramatic sky on a random day, I thought this could be pulled off a lot easier if I collaborated with Dave Van Allen to bring my imagination to reality. I shot the Company Commanders separately in the studio, and then asked Dave to drop in a dramatic sky with some rain and lightning. You can check out Dave’s insane editing skills in the video below… Big thumbs up!
I used Two Alien Bee 1600s as rim lights, and one 800 with a beauty dish as the main. The “Smokey the Bear” hats only allowed me to use light from below. I can’t really say I am a fan of “monster” light, but it seems to work in this case.
We changed the lighting around a bit and ended the shoot with some fun portraits of the guys. Chief Hollenbeck is featured below.
Big thanks to Chief Duncan, Chief Hollenbeck, and Senior Chief Eliott!!!
